If you buy one thing this winter, make it a coat in a colour that works with everything else in your wardrobe. Camel is the easiest of all: it warms up grey, softens black and sits naturally next to denim.
1. Tonal, head to toe
Cream rib sweater, wide trousers in stone, the coat belted over the top. Keep everything in the same colour family and let the textures do the work.
2. Over denim
Straight jeans, a white tee and boots. Wear the coat open with the belt tied behind so it hangs straight.
3. With tailoring
The coat is cut long enough to cover a blazer, so it works over a suit on office days without bunching at the sleeves.
4. Belt it high
Tie the belt a few centimetres above the natural waist and the whole silhouette changes. This works best over a fine-knit midi dress.
5. Shoulders only
For short walks between the car and dinner, wear it over the shoulders and let the sleeves hang. It's a small thing that makes an evening outfit look considered.
