Dressing for Kathmandu, from monsoon to winter

Warm afternoons, cold mornings and the odd late shower. The answer is layers that come off as easily as they go on.

Autumn in the valley can mean three seasons in a day. Mornings start cold, the afternoon sun is strong, and you can still get caught in a late shower on the way home. Heavy coats come out too early; light jackets aren't enough by evening.

Start with a light trench

A cotton trench is the most useful piece for these months. It sheds a shower, blocks the wind on a motorbike, and folds over your arm when the sun comes out.

Shirts over sweaters

Build on an Oxford or poplin shirt rather than a thick knit. Add a fine merino layer in the evening and take it off again indoors.

Mind your shoes

Suede looks right with autumn colours but needs a protector spray before the first wet day. If you only own one pair of boots, make them leather.
